Our collective memory

Listen once more to speeches given by important historic figures. Rediscover old radio programmes. Preserve the root of lost languages. Savour the original recording of an unforgettable singer from the beginning of the century...

Sound archives represent an essential part of our heritage, but according to UNESCO, almost 200 million hours of audiovisual programmes are in immediate danger of disappearing – which means we could lose a whole chapter of our history.

We must therefore preserve, for the long-term, the valuable parts of this audiovisual legacy, and Memnon’s role in this process is crucial.  By using our know-how, our technology and our modern vision, we can play a key part in saving these records of our past.

UNESCO Minimize

The adoption by the UNESCO General Conference in October 1980 of the Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images marked a historic moment when film, television and sound recordings became officially recognized and defined as part of the national cultural heritage in the same way textual information had been regarded for centuries.

UNESCO objective is the development of audiovisual archival infrastructure, trained professionals and accepted professional reference points to ensure the safeguard and preservation of the audiovisual heritage of humanity.
