Case studies

Case Story : SRF Migration project
Over than 100,000 hours digitized
Project scope
• 100,000 hours of television program on a wide range of formats :
1”B STD and LP, 1”C, U-matic HB and LB, BetaCamSP, DigiBeta
• Various states of tape degradation
• Three different customers in the same project: Swedish Television,
Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company and National Library
of Sweden-Department for Audiovisual Material
• 3 years project
Solution
• Non-robotic parallel digitisation: each migration line (handling
several playback devices in parallel) is controlled by one operator
• Simultaneous migration to different formats
• Custom-built tool used to measure and record RF-levels during
migration
• Quality Control:
- Human (operators are AV engineers)
- Automated (signal analysis)
- Statistical (samples)
• Use of standard Broadcast and Archive formats
• Use of XML as standard for metadata import and export
• Custom built production management tools (SQL-based software)
Memnon’s strengths
• High and fl exible production capacity
• Automated workfl ow
• Mastering of open archiving formats
• Commitment to deadlines thanks to :
- Careful project planning,
- Strong project management,
- Effi ciency in logistics and asset tracking, and
- Technical and IT expertise

Case story : Danish Radio (DR)
350,000 hours of broadcasting programs migrated
Project scope
• Largest outsourced digitisation project ever contracted
• The public Danish Radio sought an external provider able to set up a factory
digitisation process in order to migrate 350,000 hours of broadcasting programs.
• 175,000 DAT tapes, the average duration of the documents is of 2 hours
• Delivery of metadata
• 3 years contract
Solution
Non-robotic parallel digitisation : the migration line (handling several
playback devices in parallel) is controlled by one operator
• Professional playback devices with constant monitoring of the BLER level
• Professional converters with constant monitoring of the AES outputs
• Robust and stable acquisition software: NOA Medialector
• Quality Control:
- Human (operators are sound engineers, Quality Control supervisor)
- Automated (NOA)
- Statistical (samples)
- Custom built production management tools :
- Memnon Production Asset Management system for ongoing file flow control
and metadata management
- Memnon Calculation Farm for post-processing management
Memnon’s strengths
• High and flexible production capacity
• Automated workflow
• Mastering of open archiving formats
• Commitment to deadlines thanks to :
- Careful project planning,
- Strong project management,
- Efficiency in logistics and asset tracking, and
- Technical and I.T. expertise

Case study : Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF)
210,000 CDs migrated in 3 years
Project scope
• The audio visual department of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France sought

an external provider to migrate its legal deposit collection of commercial audio
CDs (1983 till today) to standard file format
• 210,000 CDs, the average duration of the documents is of 60 minutes
• Delivery and structuring of metadata (various levels and formats)
• Image scanning
• 3 years contract
Solution
• Non-robotic parallel digitisation : each migration line (handling several playback
devices in parallel) is controlled by one operator
• Professional playback devices able to deal with errors during playback
• Robust and stable acquisition software : NOA CD Lector
• Quality Control:
- Human (operators are sound engineers, Quality Control supervisor)
- Automated (NOA)
- Statistical (samples)
- Custom built production management tools:
- Memnon Production Asset Management system for ongoing file flow control
and metadata management
- Memnon Calculation Farm for post-processing management
Memnon’s strengths
• Proven track record with institutions like British Library (UK), Cité de la Musique
(FR) and Conservatoire de Paris (FR)
• High and flexible production capacity
• Automated workflow
• Mastering of open archiving formats
• Commitment to deadlines thanks to:
- Careful project planning,
- Strong project management,
- Efficiency in logistics and asset tracking, and
- Technical and IT expertise

Project case studies – Queen Elisabeth Music Competition of Belgium

Recording

• Recording of competition sessions since 1994

Digitisation & Migration

• Around 2,000 hours of Competition archives digitised from public radio, private labels, collections… Wide range of formats (1/4 tapes, DAT, acetate records …) Flexibility to deal with issues arising from unknown state of clients’ archive Use of multiple parallel transfers where possible, and slow ‘one to one’ digitisation where not Use of automated quality control wherever possible Use of skilled manpower to improve quality and save costs Use of open archiving formats – wave

Software & Solutions

• Development of database with all recordings encoded Provision of dedicated tools to improve the efficiency and quality of documentation by own cataloguers

Long term storage

• Development of long term storage services

Rights Management

• Exclusive contract for rights management

Project case studies – British Library

Digitisation & Migration
• 12,000 items on 4,200 hours of 10 high value collections, mostly unpublished and poorly catalogued Wide range of formats (1/4 tapes, DATs, records…) Flexibility to deal with issues arising from unknown state of clients’ archive Use of multiple parallel transfers where possible, and slow ‘one to one’ digitisation where not Use of automated quality control wherever possible Use of skilled manpower to improve quality and save costs Use of open archiving formats – wave All work based on ISO Archiving Standards, in particular the Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (“OAIS”) Internationally agreed best practice, such as International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives…
Software & Solutions

• Internationally agreed metadata encoding and transmission standards to allow full search and retrieval (DC, METS…) • • • Provision of dedicated tools to improve the efficiency and quality of documentation by Archive’s own cataloguers

Project Management

• Delivery within a tight project deadline Constant interaction between digitisation, documentation, metadata preparation, migration to web portal service
